Portrait of Alessandro Mareschi the only castrato to be recorded.
A castrato is a type of classical male singing voice equivalent to that of a soprano, mezzo-soprano, or contralto. Young men who showed vocal talent were castrated before puberty in order to prevent their voice from maturing.
